The global terrorist threat which has significantly impacted the UN in the past, the wide range of programmatic activities, which by nature also require to operate in environments of armed conflict or in areas affected by natural disasters, necessitate that the organizations develop and maintain a responsive and client-oriented mechanism to address security needs enabling programme delivery.
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. The ICT team plays a crucial role in teams as reliance on digital technology continues to increase in all office operations, projects, and programme deliveries. It enable, leverage and deploy technology solutions that help the team implement new ways of doing business to work smarter and more efficiently, and ultimately to improve the way it provides value to UNDSS partners, stakeholders, and beneficiaries.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under overall supervision of the Country Security Advisor (CSA) and the direct supervision of the Deputy Chief of Security, the ICT Assistant provides ICT and administrative support services to the UNDSS team located at the UN Common house in Diamniadio, and provides daily technical support to users of information management tools and technology infrastructure. The ICT Assistant promotes a client-oriented approach
Support implementation of the Security Information Systems and strategies.
- Example of Duties: Participate in the development, programming, testing, debugging, implementation and support of security systems releases, modules and functionalities, independently liaising with users to define and specify requirements
- Develops, tests, and implements simple computer application systems and programs using UN established standards for IT technologies, programming languages and tools.
- Maintain functional specifications for security application systems, programs and procedures developed and/or modified and optimizes developed solutions.
- Provides continuing user support to troubleshoots security systems
Ensure effective functioning of the team hardware and software packages.
- Example of Duties: Installs security systems software and hardware according to specifications, monitoring systems to measure performance and to provide continuous operations
- Evaluates package solutions and matches user requirements to the appropriate solution.
- Ensures that specific business needs of the Section are addressed by the software solutions provided.
- Checks and certifies license compliance and ensures that software patches are installed.
Support network administration.
- Example of Duties: Prepares technical and user documentation for major security systems as well as training materials and technical presentations.
- Organizes training for software users and provides guidance and training to new/junior staff.
- Maintain the filing system ensuring safekeeping of confidential materials.
Ensure facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the team

Required Skills and Experience
Education
Secondary education is required with formal training in IT systems, business software and/or web-based applications. Certifications in ITIL/hardware/software management/application and/or MCP are an asset.
A university degree in Information Technology, Information Management, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or an equivalent field will be given due consideration, but it is not a requirement.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
- Minimum of 5 years (with high school diploma) or 2 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant working experience in network administration, web design, providing technical support for hardware/software or cloud ERP environments, working with telecommunications facilities; and applying knowledge of database applications, web-based management systems, and cloud infrastructure solutions.
- Experience working with user-centered designs and conducting user research and testing is desirable
- Proficiency in Troubleshooting Hardware and Software Issues is an asset
- Knowledge of operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux) is highly desirable
- Proficiency in Managing Servers, Networks, and Databases is desirable
- Knowledge of virtualization technologies is desirable
- Knowledge of Programming languages is desirable
Language Requirements
- Fluency in French is required.
- Fluency in the national language of the duty station is required for local staff (wolof).
